Most high school classrooms consist of desks and a white board or projector and are taught lecture style with a teacher centered approach. My unique and diverse group of special education students don’t learn in this same way. My students achieve at higher levels when they are able to move and interact, when their instruction is individualized to meet their needs.
In my classroom, we have a continuously growing diverse population of students and are trying to make our classrooms flexible and action based. Having flexible seating will allow my students to gain sensory input during instruction. Having this sensory friendly seating, and more movement through centers in the classroom, students will have more ownership of learning and less behaviors in the classroom.
We built a sensory room for our students to use and are creating student-centered and authentic learning experiences. We’re almost there and hope you can help us finish up our flexible seating classroom! The materials requested from this project will be used in our reading corner and different centers throughout our classroom.
