Despite the fact that many students struggle in reading, we have a wide variety of reading material in the school. My students thrive from immediate gratification and to encourage voluminous independent reading, my students are motivated with simple snacks. They set reading goals for themselves at the beginning of the school year. As the year progresses, they monitor their own reading growth and receive "snacks" as rewards along the way. The school does not have funding for these types of rewards. They enjoy snacks over any other well-known reward such as a pencil or sticker. They work really hard to obtain the snack of their choice. If all it takes is a snack to keep my students on the road to reading success, it is worth the donation!
