My 5th grade students are a diverse group of learners. They have very different socioeconomic backgrounds, learning needs and styles. My co-teacher and I believe that building a positive, safe community in the classroom helps all of our students reach their full potential. We begin each day with a Morning Meeting that includes a greeting, sharing and a group activity to build student connections. Each week we begin our meeting with a picture book read aloud. The books have been thoughtfully chosen by my teaching partner to "spark" a meaningful class discussion on character building and social skills. Throughout each week, we also incorporate team-building activities.
