I want to create a classroom library full of books and audio books that my students want to read and are able to read by themselves! I want to encourage a DEAR culture (Drop Everything And Read) in my classroom so that these kids can walk away from school with a true passion for literature. However, in order to do this, my students need books that capture their attention, engage them, and are at their reading levels. This means they need books that reflect their Dominican culture, hobbies, and interests. If my students don’t have books specifically for English language learners, it is hard for them to find books that excite them. Often times, the books at their level are created for kids much younger than them.
I believe that my students deserve new books in their library and technology like audiobooks to show them that this country values their education as much as that of any other student in America. I want my students to know that their learning and interests are supported in my classroom, regardless of their level or background.
It is my dream to have my students begging me to take home their DEAR books and read them in their spare time (although they will also get lots of time in class to explore the library). Please help me get my English language learners fired up about reading! With your help, we can make this happen!
