Interactive notebooks have personalized learning in my classroom. Using interactive notebooks (INB) have increased comprehension and sense of ownership in my classroom. They have helped me as a math educator to explicitly teach each new skill (validate my direct instruction) and give my students a visual representation that enhances their comprehension daily.
In my classroom, it’s all about learning, and when students add to or highlight key ideas or summarize learning in graphic organizers in their INB’s, they are processing new information. Furthermore, practicing using the content and skills in the INB immediately after the lecture provides reinforcement of the new content. I love that the INB’s stop the forgetting cycle and imprint learning into their long-term memories. Thanks to INB’s, everything is in one place for the students to see all the connections. INB’s give my students something to build on for next year – it creates a solid work ethic in the classroom and teaches the values of organization, neatness and pride of work.
These INB’s help my students learn and study at the same time—making reviewing for assessments so much easier. They also keep my behaviorally- challenged students busy. They seldom get in trouble because they are working-- giving me time to circulate throughout the class and help individual students.
I use milk carts to store and retrieve these INB's easily and hanging folders for each foldable separated by days. Students always know where to find their notes copies incase they missed school.
Please consider supporting my students so that I can make math more visible for them using interactive notebooks.
