As an ELA class, we silently read each day as a way to help build better reading skills, expand vocabulary, and create interest where there may not be any. In addition, we also do an independent novel unit where the students build on skills such as public speaking, literary analysis, and technology fluency. This unit is allowed to come alive when the students can engage in familiar topics, storylines, and characters.
Many students are left out of the books they read up to this point, and I want to help them see they don't deserve that! These books have the chance to change kids into life-long readers, which paves the way for their success in the future.
