There are so many ways to incorporate Scholastic News magazines into our lessons! The topics easily pair with the reading, science, and social studies objectives we already teach. The articles are designed to include our Common Core reading skills such as vocabulary, nonfiction text features, and comparing/contrasting. Our class will read the articles together and identify examples of these skills.
One of the best features of the magazine is that all my students get their own copy! In class they can they can write on it, take notes and respond to the text. Then they get to take it home and share their learning with their families! These articles are age-appropriate, the topics are engaging, and the length is perfect for repeated reads. All of these things help build and encourage my students to become confident readers!
