It is known that the best way to increase lexile levels/overall reading ability is to have students read more. To make sure my students read independently, I have an independent reading station as part of their station work.
Though students can "chose their book" for independent reading, it is within a collection of books I hand picked. This is where the books (All American Boys, Whistling Past the Graveyard, Long Way Down, etc.) listed in my needed materials comes in to play. The selections have great plot lines and opens up many opportunities for discussion. This is great because students have other students to talk to about the book and well as holds them accountable for actually reading since they are choosing from within the chosen books. This helps my students grow stronger in reading while enjoying it too.
My students in the past shown an interest in independent reading when they have options, and this project will only help enrich their experiences and give them new choices of books.
