Flexible seating allows students to self-advocate, take charge, and make the best choices for themselves. During independent work, or group work, students can choose a place in the classroom that works best for them. Currently, I have 2 bean bag chairs and a bowl chair for students to choose from. We also have 6 yoga balls that are at the desks. Other students sit on the floor, move desks, sit on counter tops, or borrow my desk chair. Students grab clipboards or work on Chromebooks to complete their assignments. Groups will huddle around together sitting engaging at their own level rather than around a group of uncomfortable desks.
Flexible seating creates happier and more comfortable students, which has a dramatic increase on their motivation, understanding, and engagement. Students almost always make good choices as to where they should sit. Students also can move if they feel they are not working as well as they should. Group work can be spread out around a space rather than being confined to the desk space. On different days, students can be found in different spots depending on their own moods or avoidance of distractions. Students have the freedom to make choices for themselves and take ownership of their own learning. Students also have the freedom to move around rather than being confined to desks.
The supplies I requested will allow my students to have more seating available. The items are lightweight and can easily be moved around the classroom.
