My educational training has allowed me to explore the benefits of fostering independent reading in children. As a parent I read to and with my children from an early age and made a wide variety of books available to them through many trips to the library and bookstore. Today, I am seeing the benefits of that in them as young adults with a love for reading, strong language skills and a desire for continual learning.
So, as I begin this year with a new class at a new school, I want to build a library for my classroom that gives my students a wide variety of genres and topics to inspire their imagination and draw them into a journey in reading, that will become a lifetime habit.
Having a variety of leveled fiction and nonfiction books will allow readers to choose books that they are able to read and ones that they are interested in and will enjoy!
