Last year when our students were taking the Algebra I Regents Exam, some of our students were using calculators with missing keys and cracked screens.
Why are using calculators (the proper ones) so important? With the appropriate use of calculators many more students will have the opportunity to get past the boring mechanics and computations and learn the true meaning of mathematics.
Do the calculators do all the work for the students? Calculators do low level computations of mathematics. They do not think; they actually speed up the process of learning. The real thinking comes from understanding what the question is asking, how to set up the problem, deciding what operations are appropriate and determining whether or not the answer makes sense.
There are other calculators that are much more expensive, but in my class I say, "All I need is the basics to be successful; no bells and whistles, please!"
