Recorders are a wonderful instrument for a large group of elementary-age students to learn together. The students will not only learn to play recorder; they will also learn to care for an instrument, read music, improve their breathing abilities, and enjoy the benefits that music provides, including making connections between what they are learning in fine arts class and what they are learning or have learned in their other classes.
We plan to perform a program during the spring semester, showcasing all they have learned. The method books will assist us in learning and remembering notes, short tunes, folk songs, and other melodies, as well as give the students a visual aid. A form of "Recorder Karate" will be employed, through which each student will have the opportunity to earn different colored "belts" as they progress on the instrument.
I believe by learning the recorder my students will broaden their minds and experiences, begin to make more connections between fine arts and their other classes, gain a deeper knowledge of and appreciation for music, and hopefully help them become stronger and more independent individuals. It is my hope that all my students' lives will be enriched by music and the arts.
