I teach first grade at a public school in a high poverty area. All students receive free lunch and breakfast, and most come from single parent homes. Most students are at least one to two years below reading grade level. They do not get the help needed at home, so school instruction is very critical, especially in first grade.
Many of the students come from families that can not afford to purchase books or might not be capable of reading to their own children. That is why it is so important that the school environment provide the materials for a first grade classroom.
