These are 5th grade students in suburban D.C., and our standardized reading test scores have lagged the past couple of years. The majority of our students receive Free or Reduced Meals. These children are so used to have Reading & Math be the focus of their early education that they've been missing out on the science and social studies. These latter 2 subjects are often not introduced until 3rd - 4th grade years, which many times, is simply too late.
