For this project, students will have the chance to complete an entire design cycle, from inquiry to evaluation and presentation. Using the cube puzzle design helps students take 2D ideas and transform them into 3 dimensions.
Students will use the materials listed to brainstorm, sketch, model, evaluate, improve upon their design and finally build a wooden puzzle cube. This project uses pencils and the X-Acto pencil sharpener for orthographic sketches of each of their puzzle pieces. The Foam Puzzles will be used for practice with measuring and diagramming surfaces with the Utility dial calipers. They'll use the CCR scissors and Crayola colored pencils to color and cut out their model pieces to attach to their engineering notebook. The Learning Resource Snap Together Cubes are used for prototyping the drawn pieces. Finally, the Craftparts Direct wooden cubes will be dyed with the Tulip dye and glued together with the Aleene's glue to create the final design product, a colorful puzzle cube. Students will use data to improve models and will present their final products to the class and parents, describing their thinking process along the way.
