Having recently changed grade levels, my classroom library needs a makeover! We use the Reader's Workshop curriculum, which emphasizes student choice, and my students all love independent reading time! Most of my students do not have many books in their home, so my classroom library is a major resource for them. Many students get lost in a book during class time & then take the book home to finish at night.
Current research show that one of the best ways to increase reading skills--and to nurture a lifelong love of reading in the process-- is through introducing children to engaging book series. In this grant, I carefully selected popular children's book series..like Ivy &Bean, Amber Brown, Bad Kitty, and Dragon Slayer's Academy.
I chose a combination of comedy, realistic fiction, and fantasy to introduce a variety of genres, and selected series at the range of reading levels of my students. I believe these books will help get them hooked on reading for life!
