There is currently a literacy epidemic in the city of Houston. According to a survey conducted by the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation, 60% of Houston Area Children enter kindergarten lacking the required reading skills needed to progress through their educational journey.
As a Pre-K teacher we build the foundation that set up our littlest learners for a fun and successful educational journey. When we incorporate fun innovative literacy activities in the classroom it teaches kids to love to learn. Once that love for learning is instilled in a child their potential is sky high.
The materials in my funding request are all essential to creating a fun literacy filled classroom environment. They can build literacy skills while going "fishing" for letters, and utilize the writing center to practice early writing skills such as writing their name, retelling stories, and building vocabulary. The color printer is a necessity in a Pre-K classroom because at this age students are just building their vocabulary. The color printer will allow me to print color photos and vocabulary cards to add to our daily word wall that fit the theme of our read aloud books. Black and white pictures just don’t grasp the attention or focus on the detail of the vocabulary word as well as color photos. Plus I believe my students deserve the best. In my classroom fun and learning can be unlimited when I have the correct resources.
These materials will really help my children build a strong literacy foundation and break the cycle of children in Houston entering kindergarten unprepared. Funding my project will allow my class to show the world that reading is not only fundamental but also FUN!
