I am the AVID Co-Coordinator and AVID elective teacher on our campus. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and focuses on both schoolwide and elective implementation. The elective curriculum is centered around providing students with guidance and opportunities to become college and career-ready through critical thinking and collaborative structures.
For the past two years, the AVID Co-Coordinator and I have worked diligently to provide the AVID elective opportunity to more students on our campus. This past year we were very successful in this endeavor as we grew our student body registration by 168%. As proud and excited as we are, this growth means that that we will go from three sections of AVID to eight! In addition, some of our class sizes will double.
The AVID Curriculum provides collaborative inquiry structures such as tutorials and collaborative study groups. The presentations associated with these structures require that student presenters are able to present their points of confusion to their peer groups in order to collaboratively work through the problem.
In years past we used the whiteboards provided in the classroom. However, due to the increase of students, alternative options for presenting are needed, and mobile whiteboards will provide just that.
