Cooking at school is an opportunity for students with special needs to put their academics to use in a functional way.
Students will be learning cooking vocabulary, kitchen safety, using math for measuring, and following directions while using the prep station, refrigerator, and other cooking devices.
Some of the items we will be using in our functional kitchen are prep stations, small kitchen appliances, mixing bowls, measuring cups and spoons, dishes, utensils, and other various cooking tools. We are also needing other supplies in our classroom to write and keep our cooking recipes.
Students will also improve their motor skills as they roll, mash, and knead food items. Cooking can also help students learn to maintain focus and stay on task. Cooking together will also help build important social skills.
My goal for my students is for them to be productive and independent members of our community.
