Students spend at least half of their time awake each day in school. Classrooms need to be places that are inviting and comfortable. Giving students the opportunity to choose seating that meets their needs will help ensure that they are able to learn in an environment that works for them.
Allowing students a choice in their seating empowers them to make decisions that directly benefit their academic achievement based on their learning style. Flexible seating also allows for the natural movement that young students need throughout the day without causing distractions to other students. Another benefit of flexible seating is that it moves easily throughout the room to allow for group collaboration.
I chose the Gaiam balance ball chair because it sits in a base that rolls and the ball will not tip over. These chairs will be used throughout the day at tables, in small groups, and during reading time. I chose the wobble stools because I have two of those already in my classroom and know they work well with active students. They too will be used throughout the day by a variety of students.
