Last year was my first year teaching 3rd grade in a long time. After teaching kindergarten, 1st grade, and teachers most of my career (28 years), I realized I don't have independent work centers that are complex enough for my 3rd grade students, and the school district does not provide teachers with center games like these. The activities I selected address the word knowledge skills my 3rd grade students will need to know based on the 3rd grade standards. These resources will be used daily during our Reading Center time, a time when students work on reading, writing and word work skills independently, with a partner or in a small group while I instruct groups of students in reading. These word work centers help 3rd graders understand how words work. When students understand phonics, vowels, syllables, how prefixes and suffixes change the meaning of a word, parts of speech, etc., they become masterful readers and writers.
