Students often come into my classroom with little desire to read. My goal is to ignite this passion in them again with current, popular, young adult texts such as Refugee. The first week of school I want to engage them and build rapport with them by having a book raffle. Each student gets a ticket with their name and can put it in a jar to win a book of their liking.
By starting the year with something they can read for enjoyment I am hoping to get their teeth wet for what we will ultimately cover during the remainder of the school year.
