Our classroom library has a pitiful supply of worn, out-dated books that are really "blah!". I carefully chose selections for this project that tie directly into our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) lessons. For example, I have created lessons for light, sound, and the brain in an activity I call "Math Medics" that poses real problems for the students to tackle.
I plan to transform our classroom environment to make situations as realistic and engaging as possible (keeping STEM careers in mind). When students read about the brain, do some sensory lab experiments tied to math, engineer devices to solve problems, and report the results through technology, books will become priceless, understood, and exciting.
The donations for this project will help to improve my students' understanding of and competency in authentic, meaningful learning. I have several students with a history of tuning out in traditional learning environments. I hope to give them a plethora of these authentic tasks that will provide classroom experiences that transform their lives as well, so there is seldom a chance of finding them bored or disinterested in schoolwork again.
My classroom transformations include a courtroom for opinion writing, a planetarium that stirs exploration, and meeting places where we actively discuss and interpret our various learning experiences and findings within a safe, relaxing "campground retreat."
