My eighth-grade US History students don't usually get a chance to show off their talents. Included among them are a high number of students with special needs and English Language Learners, many of whom tend to feel discouraged and give up in traditional classrooms. But, when they were given the opportunity to create documentaries on the Civil War last year, these same students became engaged, insightful, creative and confident teens.
