My students always look forward to a special day of the week that we've titled "Flashlight Fridays". Each child is given a flashlight to use throughout the day as a way to increase their interest in reading by creating a fun way to locate and identify spelling words, sights words, and environmental print in our classroom, in different parts of the school, and out in our community.
Once students locate specified words, they shine their flashlight on it to highlight it, practice it, and apply it to real world learning. This innovative strategy provides our students with a hands-on experience that is essential for growth in their learning.
