I will meet my first graders in less than two weeks and I am certain that our classroom will soon be filled with little voices bringing the print on books to life. However, I am concerned with the limited amount of books in Spanish that are available in the classroom as of today. I am hoping to expand our book selection within the next few weeks.
Picture books and audio books will positively impact students' language development, providing comprehensible input while modeling correct fluency and inflection in the target language. Students will enjoy listening to stories and informational text that we have first read in small groups together. In addition to practicing fluency, there will be opportunities for demonstrating comprehension via retelling and answering key questions about the text.
The materials that I am kindly requesting will help my students improve their vocabulary and fluency in Spanish while also providing opportunities to apply overall reading skills. This will set them well on their way towards producing oral and written language creatively and accurately in two different languages! What a way to prepare caring and productive citizens of our world!
