The buzz in the room is loud, but filled with learning. At one table you see student's working together to sound out CVC words. Kneeling on the floor, using the cube bench as a table, another students is cutting and pasting work into a journal. Three Kinders are sitting in scoop rockers on the carpet with a clipboard in their lap writing in their journal. In the corner in front of an easel you see a small group of students, sitting on carpet dots, working with their teacher on a new writing strategy.
When you provide students with choice they take ownership over their learning, these new supplies would provide a more diverse learning space. The shelves will be used as benches for our meeting area, each cubby will be filled with books. The dots will create a flexible seating arrangement in our meeting area. The clipboards will allow students to find a productive space anywhere they choose to work in my room, and the caddies will allow them to bring supplies with them as they need.
As a first year teacher my room is always evolving to meet the needs of my students. I hope that these new changes will help put the fun in functional!
