My project focuses both on culturally relevant reading materials to improve my class library, and classroom supplies to support student learning. I spent time choosing books that I felt my current library was lacking: main characters of minority, books in Spanish, graphic novels, and current popular fiction. Too often my classroom library is the primary library my students come in contact with. Therefore, my library needs to engage young students if I hope to cultivate life-long readers. As a reading teacher, my dream is for every student to find a book that they can identify with or have spark their interest.
My goal is for my students to enter into a classroom where they can feel their needs are provided for. The children I teach do not always have the supplies they need to be successful in school. It is my hope that by receiving things such as highlighters, note cards and pencils that I can give my students all of the tools they need to become strong, independent learners.
