In this day and age, lots of children struggle with being able to regulate their emotions and stay focused while at school. As their teacher, it is my responsibility to provide a safe and loving environment where they can learn and grow to the best of their ability. I must be able to meet each child where they are and in a way that meets their specific needs. I want my students to have tools to help them calm themselves, ease their anxiety and focus their attention so that they can learn. Tools such as weighted lap pads and gel seats are perfect for those kids seeking sensory input. Some may need bouncy bands or fidgets to help release pent up energy while others may need to block out all of the excess noise with headphones. To make my classroom more soothing and less distracting, I would love to put up fluorescent light filters.
My goal is to create a place where all of my students feel safe and secure so they can reach their highest potential. Most of these tools will be added to my calming corner where students can take a break or cool off when they are feeling overwhelmed. Others will be used for literacy centers where students can have that hands-on experience as they learn their ABC's. Not only am I teaching the academic curriculum, but I am teaching my kindergartners important social-emotional skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Thank you for partnering with me to better their futures!
