My students and I will use these tubs to help them become familiar with letter sounds. This is an early literacy skill that needs to be mastered before learning to read. This will also be a great resource for English language learners, as they will learn new words while handling the tub’s contents. That’s important because vocabulary is usually why students who speak English as a second language struggle when learning to read.
Each week, the students will have the opportunity to use one to three of the tubs in a literacy center. The contents in the tub look like everyday objects, so I expect for their vocabulary to increase after using this resource.
