Each year, I run out of the basic classroom and teaching supplies before the second semester begins! Sick and hungry students keep me running back and forth from Walmart for tissues, granola bars, hand-sanitizer, and Clorox wipes. I cannot expect students to remain focused on their academic success when they are distracted by rumbling stomachs and running noses.
Once my students' basic needs are met, then I can begin to focus on building skills that will help them in their future careers. Items like expo markers, color paper, organizers, and duck tape help me create an engaging and focused learning environment for my students.
