How many times have you heard someone say, "I took Spanish in high school but don't remember anything"? Too many times, right? If you know me, you know that I am passionate about creating an INTERACTIVE and AUTHENTIC learning experience for my students.
Gone are the days of boring Spanish textbooks and rote worksheets! Kids need to experience the language. They need to play with the language. And most importantly, learn to respect other cultures.
Bingo and board races are ok, but my students have learned that they have more fun when they are actually acquiring and using the language! I facilitate this in my classroom by creating BreakOuts. BreakOut uses teamwork and critical-thinking skills required for an "Escape Room" and combines them with 100% authentic use of Spanish. The boxes and different types of locks and "spy" stuff on my list are part of the BreakOut. The best part is that they provide incredible resources and templates AND I still get to create my own content that is personalized for my students.
We are in desperate need of level-appropriate novels and their teacher resource packs. I have many semi-fluent Spanish speakers in levels 2 and 3. Having literature in Spanish will empower my students and make them feel proud of their heritage and language.
The list of books I selected--Most important--5 copies of El Ekeko: Un misterio Boliviano by Katie Baker and Fiesta Fatal by Mira Canion (including teacher resource packet and audio)--encourage higher level thinking skills in the target language and most importantly, support visual and auditory learners.
ANY expo markers, plastic covers, chalk, etc., would be AWESOME! Ball pit balls, chalk and Jenga are used for super fun communicative activities! Thank you for giving my kids the chance to fall in love with Spanish and learning.
