Our school is fortunate enough to participate in a pilot program this year that will allow for 60 minutes of recess each day. We go outside as often as we can and have a great outdoor playground. However, some days we cannot go outside due to weather. My students need engaging indoor recess activities and a way to store them.
I chose games and activities that will be fun for students but also provide practice with fine motor skills. Students spend too much time on technology, so several of the games, like Jenga, tenzies, and Connect Four, must be played with other students. This provides a great opportunity for building relationships and social skills. I also chose LEGOs, play dough, and art paper to allow students to be creative and practice fine motor skills. Finally, I need storage containers to keep supplies together and organized. This pilot is designed to keep kids active, improve social skills, and reduce classroom behavior issues.
