Paterson has a high rate of crime, unemployment, homelessness, and poverty. My students have limited access to learning materials in and outside the classroom. My sprouting mathematicians are enthusiastic learners. They are eager to learn about the exciting world of math, especially when it is made relevant to them. They require hands-on materials to deeply understand concepts and to develop an intuitive sense of mathematics. A good education, as well as adequate classroom materials, is the only means of altering or reversing poverty and expected negative outcomes. Learning centers and manipulatives will keep them motivated and excited about math. The ability to, build, observe and classify materials will enhance their learning. It will give them the opportunity to explore their learning environment hands-on in a developmentally appropriate classroom, while providing me the opportunity to work with small groups.
