Mathematics is best learned by doing, by exploring, and by trying and trying again if at first one doesn't succeed. Our classroom is full of opportunities for students to attack problems together, explore new ideas, and build the understanding that will lead to a better depth of mathematical knowledge. I have three tables where students can stand or sit to collaborate, as it raises up and down, and I recently covered it with a dry erase surface that needs resurfacing. Additionally, I have a small group instructional table where dry erase surface will allow me to more easily work with multiple students. Using dry erase surfaces are a non-threatening way for students to engage in the mathematics we are investigating. They love when boards and markers are available, and are often more willing to give difficult problems an attempt. Engagement rises, which yields richer conversations, and overall, more learning! My project will provide an added permanent whiteboard space in a new classroom that lacks adequate whiteboard space for collaboration. It will also provide paint for me to cover three to four tables to turn them into writeable surfaces. Lastly, the static cling sheets can be used on cabinets to allow for collaboration, in multiple areas in the room, so all students have access to a standing space to think, write, and explore.
