The kindergarten students at LeConte Elementary school in Berkeley, California bring skills to share with each other. Half of our students are native Spanish speakers and half are native English speakers. By the time they leave our school in 5th grade, they are all bilingual. Each day we learn in both languages and the students support each other in learning the languages and the subject materials. The school population is diverse in many aspects-culturally, racially, economically and in family education. Meeting the wide range of individual needs of our students is a huge challenge in Berkeley. As a kindergarten teacher, having the right materials is key to meeting the goals of happiness and success for all students.
