This school year I was given a crash mat for my room to help meet a need for one of my students. What I didn't expect was the reaction of nearly all of the students who entered my room. They all wanted to "crash" into the mat. Granted, who doesn't love a good jump into a crash mat? However, it opened my eyes to one simple fact.
Most of my kids have sensory needs that aren't being met. Some of them had OT therapy once a week. Yet, I saw these kids once a day. With valuable input from the Occupational Therapist, my room could provide a piece of the solution to these kids' needs. Next school year, the OT & I will create a section of my room devoted to meeting sensory needs. If this project is successful, I hope it can be helpful to not just OT & Special needs students, but any student in the school who has sensory needs or needs a sensory break.
