Building models to represent scientific phenomenon is the driving force in my science class. A specific phenomena, such as "The western slopes of mountains in California get more rainfall, and therefore are more lush with vegetation," will be stated. Students will have to build a model to show why this is so.
Models depicting scientific phenomena will be built by the students to show their understanding of a concept. For example, spray bottles will represent rainfall in the water cycle, a fan will represent the jet stream, plastic cups built into a mountain range and covered with paper will represent the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The spiral notebooks, colored paper and copy paper will allow students to record their finding and keep a running log as they update their observations.
