My school district is implementing a new reading program that requires the students to have their eyes on print daily. This means that the students need long periods of time daily where they are sitting and reading. I currently have a lot of little readers and shorter chapter books for them to read, but then they are reading multiple books a day, not getting the enjoyment of sitting and reading the same book for a few days or even a week.
I am requesting a variety of chapter books at various levels to meet the needs of all of my students.
When students have choice, their love of reading grows. I want to ensure that each student always has a book in their hands that interests them and will guide them on their reading journey.
Another component of this new reading program is not only sustained daily reading of books they choose, but also participating in book clubs. When the students can sit and read the same book, then have a rich discussion afterwards, their level of comprehension is going to improve, especially when they are reading books in Spanish and they are not native Spanish speakers. Being able to read a book with a friend, then have a discussion afterwards is a recipe to building life-long readers.
