Guided reading is a very important part of our day. It’s the time that I spend giving reading instruction to each child, at their level, in a small group setting. Students learn to decode, read fluently, and various comprehension strategies to help them become better readers. In order for me to do this, when students are not reading with me, they are rotating throughout meaningful literacy centers.
Headphones and flexible seating would help improve our literacy centers.
One literacy center that we need materials for is Listen to Reading. At this center each student logs into their Raz Kids reading account. Raz Kids is an online reading program with interactive ebooks and reading quizzes to monitor reading comprehension. I assess each child every trimester and enter their reading level into their account. Each book that they read on Raz Kids is at their individual reading level. Students first listen to the book, read it independently, then take a comprehension quiz. Headphones are required for the listening portion. The headphones previously used were flimsy and broke easily through wear and tear. We need 6 sets of new durable headphones.
We need seating options for our Read to Self, Read to Someone, and Work on Writing literacy centers. At these centers students are either reading independently, writing independently, or are paired with a reading buddy and taking turns reading a book at their reading level to each other. Flexible seating allows students to make a choice that works best for their learning. My students are lively and energetic. Having comfortable seating would help them stay motivated and engaged at these literacy centers. These cushions and lap desks will also be useful throughout various portions of our learning day.
