With a real digital SLR camera, students can learn the technical and artistic side of digital photography. Cell phones are handy but I teach in a Title 1 school (which means it is lower income) and not all of my students have their own cell phones. We need a digital camera so each student has the opportunity to learn using a technology they might never have been able to use before.
This year, along with learning photography in class, we're also taking yearbook photos. My young paparazzi can't show up to an event empty handed and be expected to capture the fun and excitement of all the basketball games, the amusement of the 8th grade dance of the triumphs of the science fair.
I want to give my students another outlet for their creativity. I want to give them another means to express themselves. I want to introduce them to another type of art that we were never able to have last year.
