My elementary school had an unexpected increased enrollment for this upcoming school year and had to add an additional second-grade classroom. However, the only room available was the music room, so music was cut and that room became the new second-grade classroom, my classroom. It is very barren, lacking school supplies, teacher supplies, and, most unfortunately, books. I have been able to gather much of what a classroom needs but have been unable to create a cultural and diverse classroom library, something that I consider to be a necessity in any classroom. A classroom library provides students with a way to explore multiple social, emotional, and cultural perspectives in the books that they choose to read. Young learners need literature that engages them in their own learning and growth, improves fluency and comprehension, and deepens their understanding of the world they live in.
My students are at an age where they are beginning to develop their individuality, and the books they find and read from a classroom library are the building blocks to their future growth and potential. I want my classroom library to include literature that reflect their interests, hobbies, and overall personalities. Once students see themselves reflected in their own learning, their engagement level increases and they will want to find more books similar to the ones they found themselves in. The choices of literature I chose for my project gives students a variety of different literary genres to engage with. Hopefully they will be able to find a book (and hopefully a series!) that is just right for them.
