Kayla Delzer, in a follow-up story to her book, 鈥淲hy the 21st-Century Classroom May Remind You of Starbucks.鈥, said it perfectly; 鈥淥utside the windows of our classroom is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world full of choices. How can we expect our students to solve problems and make choices independently if we constantly solve their problems and make their choices for them?鈥
In order to mold and nurture 21st Century learners, we, as educators, need to constantly be asking ourselves; 鈥淲hat can I do to encourage and maintain out-of-the-box, problem solving, innovative, collaborative and community-driven students, in even the littlest of learners?
Flexible seating is a choice method within the classroom, versus the 鈥渙ld school鈥, seating chart often seen in traditional classrooms. In purchasing items such as; balance ball chairs, sensory cushions and comfortable seating like bean bags and floor spots, I will be providing my students with choice, creating a greater sense of community, and setting my classroom up in a way that is more conducive to collaboration. In doing all of this, the children will also experience first hand, the importance of exercise and movement to keep the mind engaged and alert.
