“We need to recognize that reading ought to change us. Reading ought to lead to thinking that is disrupting, that shakes us up, that makes us wonder, that challenges us. Such thinking sets us on a path to change, if not the world, then at least ourselves” (Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst).
I want to provide this type of reading opportunity for all students. The books they will have to choose from include Just Mercy, The 57 Bus, Tattoos on the Heart, The Line Becomes a River, and The Sun Does Shine. Students will write, think, discuss, and reflect. They will do this individually, in small groups, and in conference with the teacher.
