The foreign language classroom is shifting! We're used to sitting and conjugating verb after verb. Studies in brain-based learning show that getting up and experiencing actions help us to learn faster, the way we learned English as children. I am shifting my classroom from rows of desks to an amphitheater-style room with tables where students can be easily grouped for tasks, where they can get up and move when necessary, and where the classroom can be easily transformed each day to meet the needs of my students. My kids love to get up and move around during class, and they always tell me how much faster class goes by with more stimulating activities. These tables would benefit ALL of my students in ALL of my classes.
