The use of small groups is a daily classroom activity. One of the 5 groups in my class is independent reading. Often, I find that some of my students are discouraged to read independently. This may be due to low reading and comprehension levels. In order to encourage all my students to read, I decided to start this project. Make the independent reading center more appealing!
The engaged independent reader will soar!
With my funded project, I will be able to make this independent reading center more appealing to my students. With the two bean bag chairs, there will be more flexible seating. Students would prefer more comfortable seating than sitting at their desk. Students will be more excited to read the books provided to them. In the wish-list, I have listed many books, every book is at a different level. Because there is a wide range of reading levels in my class, I have asked for multiple books. Books in this wish-list include classics (Little Critter, Five Little Monkeys) a classic fairy-tale set of 6, realistic non-fiction (Apples, Turtles), fiction (Mr.Nobody) and even bilingual for my English Language Learners (Harry, el perrito sucio). There is a set of guided reading books that will be used when there is time to read together. We will store these books in the colorful cabinet organizer in my list as well. Each color will represent a different level so we can continue to keep books organized. I have asked for a pencil sharpener so that students may save time in sharpening their pencils and complete a graphic organizer over the story they have read.
I know that the more practice my students get reading independently, the more confidence they will have and the more they will improve!
Thank you!
