Our school strives to instill a love of reading in our students, which can easily be lost as children get into the middle school grades. To that effect, we implement literature reading within our math classes for at least 30 minutes a week. I am a second-year teacher with few classroom resources, and by having classroom sets of novels I can put more of a concentrated effort into making sure everyone is included in the reading.
I want to make my students realize that an interesting story can also include mathematical concepts, even if they didn't initially realize they are there. These two popular and well-loved titles will help demonstrate this to the students. Having enough copies for each student to have their own in class will help keep the students engaged and excited to participate.
