My district recently adopted a new reading curriculum which requires mentor texts. These mentor texts are to be shared with the students- the best way to do this is with a document camera so that the students can visually follow along with what is happening in the story!
Because there isn't enough money in our budget, I have always had to find alternative ways to share these texts with students. This means getting out my marker and chart paper and hand writing the pages of text on an easel. A document camera would allow my students to be able to quickly access the text, learn the strategy I am teaching them, and give them more time to practice it on their own.
In writing workshop we like to practice editing and revising. Having a document camera allows me to display examples of students' writing that we can edit together, so that students can use those strategies to go off and edit their own later. Students also love to take ownership of the work they're doing and share some examples of their writing. With this document camera, students can be proud of the work they have created and that's how their love for learning is fostered!
