Regardless of a student's background, we are talking about kids. Everyone gets bad breath; everyone needs a snack every so often; everyone needs some floss after lunch. These things are part of a student's day and if they are focused on these needs, they are less likely to focus on my math lesson.
If I wanted them to listen to me and learn math, I must first care for those more basic needs like food, drink, and cleanliness. Therefore, I want to be able to offer them some milk and cereal for breakfast. I want to be able to offer them a toothbrush and toothpaste that they can use and then take home with them. I want to be able to give them some juice or a quick goldfish snack to wake them up during class. There are lots of things to think about and worry about, but there are some things I can help these teenagers with by simply having items available. Thus opening space for math thoughts and math concerns.
