A rug that has bright colors and interesting shapes is a great way to foster individuality and community at the same time. I am embarking on an exciting journey with my students. I am launching a "Daily 5" independent learning environment that encourages students taking responsibility for their ability to learn. This learning structure gives students more options focused on literacy but can also be integrated into all core curriculum areas. In part this journey considers the diverse learning styles and ways that students can focus on learning while managing their environment. A large part of the "Daily 5" is developing a supportive learning community in which students recognize that they are all at different points on their learning journey. They learn to support each other and celebrate their individual paths.
The floor seats are a start to flexible seating options in my classroom. I want to be able to provide diverse seating options for students. These chairs will provide choices for the students that struggle with traditional seating options. Often the traditional desk and chair steals the student's focus. When the environment is not conducive to concentration, learning suffers. I hope to create an entire classroom of flexible seating in order to give all my students a place where learning in your own space encourages learning at your own pace.
